Talks at Te Papa Museum
It all begins with an idea.
I was honored to be invited to participate in the Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality exhibition program at New Zealand's Te Papa national museum in March 2019. During the event, I had the opportunity to discuss 'Chinese symbolism in Architecture' and share my knowledge of Chinese culture.
In my master's thesis, completed in 2010, I explored how the traditional Chinese garden could be reimagined in modern urban settings. With China's rapid economic growth, young Chinese designers now have the chance to infuse their cultural perspectives into contemporary architecture. My research focused on integrating natural elements to reinterpret Chinese cultural values within today's urban context.
Throughout history, Chinese architecture has been influenced by cultural beliefs. Symbolism and aesthetics are intertwined, shaping the design of buildings and gardens. Even functional architectural elements showcased in the exhibition, such as roof eave caps and bronze brackets, are adorned with meaningful patterns and images. These decorations carry auspicious meanings, like deer symbolizing longevity and phoenix representing peace.
The fusion of symbolism, aesthetics, and cultural significance has woven a vibrant tapestry in Chinese architecture, providing a deeper understanding of the country's heritage and values.
